Cuarteto Cantor parte de seleccionar fragmentos de entrevistas a Tita Merello y “El polaco” Goyeneche buscando extraer de la voz hablada un comportamiento musical para luego hacerlo dialogar con los instrumentos del cuarteto de cuerdas.
¿Por qué el polaco y Tita? Hay algo en el decir, hay algo en el tono, en el uso de las palabras, en la manera de plantarse frente al micrófono que sintetiza en sus voces la forma de hablar en Buenos Aires en una época. Un estilo que siento cercano y al mismo a años luz de lo que somos los porteños hoy, tan globalizados, tan acostumbrados a ese falso neutro y a ese hablar “latino” que se impone por todas partes.
En algún momento del proceso me pregunté si no debería forzar la escritura del cuarteto llevándola hacia el tango pero opté por ir detrás de los timbres, de las cadencias en el habla. Así surgió una suerte de dramaturgia, un relato arbitrario, una forma.
Me peleé un poco con lo que estaba haciendo, no le encontraba sentido. Recordé entonces las palabras de Mario Levrero al inicio de El discurso vacío: “Aquello que hay en mí, que no soy yo, y que busco”. Algo de eso hay en el Cuarteto cantor.

Cuarteto Cantor starts by selecting fragments of interviews with Tita Merello and "El polaco" Goyeneche (two icons of the history of tango) seeking to extract from the spoken voice a musical behavior and then make it dialogue with the instruments of the string quartet.
Why the polaco and Tita? There is something in the way they say, there is something in the tone, in the use of words, in the way they stand in front of the microphone that synthesizes in their voices the way of speaking in Buenos Aires at that time. A style that I feel close and at the same time light years away from what we porteños are today, so globalized, so accustomed to that false neutral "Latin" imposed everywhere.
At some point in the process I wondered if I shouldn't force the writing of the quartet by taking it towards tango, but I opted to go after the timbres, the cadences in the speech. Thus a kind of dramaturgy emerged, an arbitrary narrative, a form.
I struggled a bit with what I was doing, I couldn't make sense of it. Then I remembered Mario Levrero's words at the beginning of El discurso vacío: "That which is in me, which is not me, and which I seek". There is something of that in Cuarteto cantor.
